When I first started baking more with whole wheat flour, I always used white whole wheat and just tried to get everything to taste like I had used “regular” all-purpose white flour (for the most part). There’s nothing really wrong with that approach – and I will continue to use this approach when I’m trying to “sneak” some healthy in 😉 –  but why not let whole wheat flour taste like…whole wheat flour?! Whole wheat flour can add a wonderful, almost nutty flavor to many baked goods and I love the chewy, texture that it gives these cookies.

Let me also say that although these cookies are whole wheat, they are not a “healthy” cookie, per se. I mean, I guess they are marginally healthier than regular cookies since they do have whole wheat flour, but they also have butter and lots of sugar =). That being said, I loved these cookies – just as much, if not more, than my regular chocolate chip cookies! Enjoy!

Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies
1-1/2 cups of whole wheat flour
3/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 stick cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 oz (1/2 cup) semi-sweet chocolate chips (add more if you want)

1. Preheat oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt into a medium bowl.
3. Combine butter and sugars in another bowl and beat on low with paddle attachment of your stand mixer until blended, about 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the egg and mix until combined, then mix in vanilla.
4. Add the dry ingredients and mix on low until barely combined, about 30 seconds. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl.
5. Add the chocolate chips and mix on low until evenly distributed (alternatively, you can use a wooden spoon).
6. Using a 1-1/2 tbsp scoop, place dough on prepared baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 8 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Transfer to wire rack to cool.  Makes 22 cookies.
